Welcome Back to the Library
The mission of the Donald P. Yates library is to foster the love of reading, support the curriculum, teach reading skills, and provide materials to your child that s/he wants to read.
During the year, we will study the different genres of literature (folk tales, fairy tales, tall tales, poetry, biographies, etc.), use of reference materials like atlases, dictionaries, and encyclopedias, and the work of exceptional authors and illustrators like Keven Henkes, Chris Van Allsberg, Lois Ehlert, and Patricia McKissick. The library teaches about the various holidays like Constitution Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Also this year, the library will work with the Second Grade teachers as they lead your children through their very first research paper.
Mrs. Phillip’s and Foggin’s classes will check out every Tuesday, while Mrs. Burnette’s class’ check out day will be on Wednesday. Mrs. Corriher, Mrs. Shaver, Mrs. Whitlock, Mrs. Bancroft, Mrs. Simpkins, Mrs. Durham, and Mrs. Morris’ classes check out on Thursdays. Friday is the big day for Mrs. Gault, Mrs. Word, Mrs. Ginn, Ms. Meadors, Mrs. Lay, Mrs. Robbins and Mrs. Smith’s classes.
If your child wants a new library book every day, the library offers early morning check out from 8:05-8:30 a.m. and late check out from 2:00-2:30 p.m. The student just needs to ask permission from his teacher and get a library pass.
The library is going digital. We have e-sources (electronic sources) that you and your child can access from home. The library has purchased an online database that has 3 offerings: New Book of Knowledge (an encyclopedia), America the Beautiful, and Amazing Animals of the World. To access, go to http://go.grolier.com. Enter the username “dpyates” and the password “Grolier.”
Our school hopes you enjoy using these online resources from home. These products were purchased with the profits of last year’s book fairs. Keep reading!
